This is called hydropower. PG&amp;E uses different types of hydropower facilities to generate electricity for customers in Northern and Central California. Here\u2019s how hydropower facilities work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Hydropower Dams. <\/b>A dam is used to raise the water level of a river and create a reservoir. Water in the reservoir builds up pressure against the dam, <span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">and can be released into a powerhouse, where it spins a turbine to create electricity.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Dams with Pumped Storage.<\/b> When demand for electricity is low (such as at night), water that has been used to create electricity can be pumped back up through the dam to the reservoir, where it is stored for future use.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\"><b>Run-of-the-River Hydropower.<\/b><\/span><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); color: var(--body_typography-color); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\"> A large pipe called a penstock carries water from a river downhill to a powerhouse, where the force of the water spins a turbine to create electricity. Then the water is returned back to the river downstream.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0); font-family: var(--body_typography-font-family); font-size: var(--body_typography-font-size); font-style: var(--body_typography-font-style,normal); font-weight: var(--body_typography-font-weight); letter-spacing: var(--body_typography-letter-spacing);\">PG&amp;E\u2019s hydropower system\u2014one of the largest in the country\u2014includes nearly 100 reservoirs. It is built along 16 river basins that flow across nearly 500 miles in our service area. The turbines turn electromagnets that consist of heavy coils of copper wire.
