Well, you&#8217;ll have to use your imagination and get really small. Then one day, out of the blue, you hear a loud roar and whoosh!\u2014you&#8217;re sucked up through a <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-12\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-12\" data-container=\"popover-12\" data-content=\"A hole drilled or bored into the earth to bring up water, sulfur, natural gas, or petroleum.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Well\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>well<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0and into a huge pipeline.<\/p>\n<p>You and your little gas buddies are pumped through this pipeline to a <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-13\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-13\" data-container=\"popover-13\" data-content=\" A place where natural gas is treated to remove impurities.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Processing Plant\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>processing plant<\/strong><\/span>. There, you say goodbye to the water vapor, carbon dioxide, and other molecules considered impurities. These are removed in a treatment process called &#8220;sweetening&#8221; the gas.<\/p>\n<p>Next, you are pumped into a network of steel <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-14\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-14\" data-container=\"popover-14\" data-content=\"A network of large steel pipes that carries natural gas from processing plants to utilities.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Transmission Pipes\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>transmission pipes<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0that range in size from 20 to 42 inches in diameter. If you could make a sound, you would probably be able to hear it echo inside these big pipes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Under Pressure <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>About every 50 to 60 miles you pass through a <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-15\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-15\" data-container=\"popover-15\" data-content=\"A place where natural gas is pressurized to be sure it flows effectively through pipes.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Compressor Station\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>compressor station<\/strong><\/span>. Compressor stations compress (squeeze) you to push you to the next station along the line.<\/p>\n<p>The compressor station works kind of like a hand around a tube of toothpaste. Squeezing the bottom of the tube causes the toothpaste to flow out the top. And the harder it&#8217;s squeezed, the faster it flows. Likewise, the harder the compressor stations pressurize you, the faster you flow.<\/p>\n<p>You and the other gas molecules are tightly packed together now, and you feel as if you are being pushed quickly through the pipes from behind. Compressing a gas reduces its <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-16\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-16\" data-container=\"popover-16\" data-content=\"The amount of space taken up by something.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Volume\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>volume<\/strong><\/span>, so many more of you now fit into a smaller space. Some of your friends are sent down one fork of the pipeline to distribution companies, where they are put into <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-17\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-17\" data-container=\"popover-17\" data-content=\"Large aboveground or underground tanks used to store natural gas for future use.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Storage Tanks\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>storage tanks<\/strong><\/span> for future use. The rest of you move on to a natural gas <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-18\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-18\" data-container=\"popover-18\" data-content=\" A company or other organization that provides a public service, such as supplying electricity, natural gas, or water.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Utility\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>utility<\/strong><\/span>\u2014a company that delivers natural gas to homes and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Once you reach the gas utility, your pressure is reduced and a chemical called <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-19\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-19\" data-container=\"popover-19\" data-content=\"A chemical added to natural gas that makes it smell like rotten eggs so people will know if natural gas is leaking.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Mercaptan\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>mercaptan<\/strong><\/span> is added to you. You had no odor before, but now you can barely stand your own smell. Mercaptan contains sulfur and makes you smell like rotten eggs. It&#8217;s added so people will be able to tell if natural gas is leaking from their natural gas pipes or appliances.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Under the Street <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>From the gas utility, you travel through small pipes called <span class=\"fusion-popover popover-20\" data-animation=\"1\" data-class=\"popover-20\" data-container=\"popover-20\" data-content=\"Underground pipelines that carry natural gas from utilities to homes, businesses, and schools.\" data-delay=\"50\" data-placement=\"top\" data-title=\"Distribution Main\" data-toggle=\"popover\" data-trigger=\"hover\"><strong>distribution mains<\/strong><\/span>. These pipes are between 2 and 24 inches in diameter and run below the streets. You zip along under the street, hearing the rumble of traffic overhead.<\/p>\n<p>All of a sudden, the pipeline you were in gets smaller, and smaller again. You&#8217;re about to be used in someone&#8217;s home! The gas meter measures the amount of gas used in the home, just as an electric meter measures electricity usage. You can relax a little now, because you&#8217;re not under as much pressure. If people dig into these pipelines, the pipes can be damaged and natural gas can leak out.
