Look Out for PG&E’s Pipeline Markers |
|
Whether you’re already planting or still preparing the soil for a productive harvest, working safely around buried high-volume natural gas transmission lines is vital. High-visibility markers indicate the general location of these lines on agricultural property. Be alert for these markers, but never use them as a substitute for notifying 811. |

Pipeline markers call for extra care |
PG&E’s pipeline markers on agricultural property are typically red-and-white striped but may also be bright yellow or orange. They include the operator’s name and emergency phone number and show a pipeline’s approximate location.
|
Don’t rely on the markers themselves to determine exact pipeline locations. Notify 811 at least two working days (not including the date of your request, weekends and legal holidays) before you rip, till, augur, grade or excavate in any way. This free service will notify underground operators to locate buried utilities so you can work safely. Call 811 or use the online ticket entry system at california811.org.
|
An on-site meeting may be required |
Digging, tilling and other heavy-equipment work can jeopardize the safety of high-volume natural gas transmission lines. To ensure that these lines are not compromised, PG&E requires an on-site meeting (or a field meet) before certain activities occur nearby. The purpose of this meeting is to verify the line’s precise location and discuss intended excavation methods and tools. |
Also, at this meeting, PG&E will determine if a standby (PG&E representative) is required on-site during certain activities such as:
- Excavating, grading, discing and ripping within 5 feet of a pipeline
- Operating heavy equipment within 10 feet of a pipeline
|
In case of an emergency |
If you contact a pipeline or suspect a gas pipeline leak, immediately call 911 and then PG&E at 1-800-743-5000 or our Agricultural Customer Service Center Help Line at 1-877-311-3276 (FARM) (even if damage is minor) and notify the Underground Safety Board at california811.org within two hours. |
